Motorists need to get their motorcycles from point A to point B, and riding it there isn't always an option. Perhaps you’re in need of a repair shop or you’re embarking on a road trip, but still want to access your main vehicle. The best option could be to transport your motorcycle using a truck!

Here are some best practices when transporting your motorcycle with a truck.

Using a Motorcycle Trailer

You should first consider using a motorcycle trailer. Motorcycle trailers are built low to the ground for easy loading. They are also made to offer top security to keep your vehicle safely on the road. If this is a viable option for you, we highly recommend it!

Using a Truck

If you don’t have access to a motorcycle trailer, the next best option is a truck. This approach can be hassle-free as long as you use the right tools and follow the right steps!

The Truck Bed

Use a truck with a longer bed and a lower load height—this will make the transporting process much easier. Try to set your truck up on a slight incline, with the truck bed tilted downward. Don’t forget to consider whether your motorcycle meets the weight requirements of your vehicle and never put too heavy of a load on your truck. This can be dangerous and damaging to both vehicles!

The Ramp

There are many types of ramps available, such as arched ramps, which make the process smoother by turning one sharp angle into a few smaller angles. There are also long ramps that create a more gradual incline.

Make sure to account for your motorcycle's ground clearance. If it's higher off the ground, you can make do without a steeper ramp. If it's lower to the ground, try using a steep ramp so you won’t run the risk of damaging it.

Ramp Alternative

While the preferred method is to use a ramp, if necessary, find a steep hill. This can help your motorcycle to move slowly down the hill and into your truck bed. All you need to do is park your truck at the base of a slope and slowly walk it down into the truck bed!

Loading The Truck

It’s important to first secure the ramp. The weight of your machine can cause the ramp to move which could cause significant damage to both vehicles. Use either security straps or ratchet straps to keep the ramp set in place.

Next, you need to get your motorcycle up the ramp. It’s best to walk it up the ramp without using power. Take it slow and steady to make this a damage-free experience.

Make sure to also secure your motorcycle. Use restraints, either ratchet or cam-buckle straps, to tie down your bike. Aim to tighten and compress your suspension about halfway. Less than that could make it come loose, but more than that and it could push the forks too far down. After you secure your machine, remember to thoroughly check that everything is in place!
